Job Market Overview

Law

The legal industry is undergoing rapid growth with emphasis being placed on strategic client relationship management

Market Overview

The legal industry is undergoing rapid growth with a great deal of emphasis being placed on strategic client relationship management and profile/brand raising initiatives. Our experience is that, in most cases, candidates we have placed have come from within the professional services sector. However as demand regularly outstrips supply, we always look for candidates with transferable skills from other industries. In doing this our skill is to recognise the type of candidate that will work well within the legal environment. We have done this many times, and always recommend it as part of a recruitment strategy where possible.

We've noticed...

As this highly competitive sector increasingly becoming transnational and global, many firms face issues around process development, internal communications, cross selling initiatives and brand awareness. Also as legal services are difficult to "productise", there is more of a focus on individual lawyers capabilities and profile. It all makes for interesting and challenging careers for the business support professional.

What have we done?

Our origins are in law firm recruitment, and we now believe we have one of the strongest brands in the world (not bad for an Aussie-based firm established in 2004). The growth of our business in law has surprised us, but is as a direct result of referrals and word of mouth. We are delighted that we now have truly global alumni of placed candidates in the following cities throughout the world:

Adelaide Auckland Brisbane Canberra Dubai Edinburgh Hong Kong London Melbourne New York Perth Singapore Sydney San Francisco Tokyo Wellington

Accounting

We have seen an increase from the Accounting mid-sized group of accounting firms who are increasing their business support teams

Market Overview

Due to their sheer size and need for professional services personnel, we've done a lot of work with the "Big 4". However we have seen a marked increase in recent times from the mid-sized group of accounting firms who are also increasing their business support teams, particularly in the areas of marketing and HR.

A high percentage of these roles tend to be newly created and have suited candidates with previous experience in the professional services sector.

We've noticed...

The continued dominance of the Big 4 have created a brand within a brand so there is more pressure to differentiate service lines and create innovative solutions. This has led to a growth in sales and business development roles as well as strategic communications and brand focused positions.

What have we done?

The accounting sector is another busy market for Seldon Gill, particularly in Australia and New Zealand. Large business support teams and regular restructures have kept us very busy to date.

Engineering

Candidates who have experience working in large multi-national matrix-based structures are highly sought after

Market Overview

This sector is enjoying unprecedented growth worldwide (and shows no signs of stopping soon) which has had a positive impact on the number and variety of exciting career positions newly created for business support professionals.

Candidates who have experience working in large multi-national matrix-based structures are highly sought after particularly in areas of marketing communications, internal communications and client relationship management. So too are candidates with experience in related industries such as transport, mining, science and the environment.

We've noticed...

With organisations growing rapidly through mergers and acquisitions, this leads to major organisational development changes with geographical and cultural issues. People who thrive in this sector tend to be able to move with change.

What have we done?

There has never been a professional services boom to match what is currently happening in the engineering (and related) sectors. This has become our biggest growth sector, particularly in marketing and business development related roles.

Academia

The Australian graduate and Academia post graduate market has become intensely competitive

Market Overview

The Australian graduate and post graduate market has become intensely competitive with the academic institutions campaigning heavily for domestic and international student uptake.

New innovation in course programming and delivery has culminated in active marketing campaigning across key institutions.

We've noticed

Candidates who perform well in these roles tend to come from working in highly complex structures and have great campaign management skills and a good understanding of b2c marketing techniques and reputation management.

What have we done?

Marketing recruitment in this sector has grown significantly. Seldon Gill has recruited a diverse range of marketing professionals who can develop integrated marketing initiatives that build reputation and devise processes to assist in strengthening customer relationships.

Associations

One of the main issues facing industry based associations is staying relevant to their target audience

Market Overview

One of the main issues facing industry based associations is staying relevant to their target audience by constantly communicating their value to members and producing services that members have an appetite for.

Increased competition in this sector with broad based industry associations has impacted on niche associations and we have seen a rise in the number of client relationship and business development management roles come to the market. Candidates who are used to working in membership based, not for profit and academic institutions, are highly regarded as are people with campaign management and project management abilities

We've noticed

As the days of career for life are now over and people are changing roles across a variety of professions through the course of their careers, industry associations have to develop unique and relevant services to maintain and attract members. This means adopting regular two way communications strategies and being able to review / adapt services regularly.

What have we done?

Seldon Gill has recruited a diverse range of marketing professionals who have the ability to develop integrated marketing initiatives that build reputation and drive loyalty, strengthen key relationships and build new ones, who understand the drivers that make a successful association - and manage all the issues in between.

International

There has never been a better time for candidates to use their skills to secure work overseas.

Market Overview

The world is truly a smaller place and there has never been a better time for candidates to use their skills to secure work overseas. In particular the professional services market offers an unlimited opportunity and this shows no sign of slowing down particularly given the growth plans of the majority of firms within this sector.

What have we done?

Our dedicated international consultants have successfully placed candidates with professional services firms - often from the other side of the world - and are committed to assisting both clients and candidates beyond a simple introduction. They let them know the full story with international transfers; encourage sensible negotiation, and offer realistic assessment and advice prior to a candidate beginning a new role.

Where have we placed?

Cities placed within the professional services sector internationally include:

Adelaide Auckland Brisbane Canberra Dubai Edinburgh Hong Kong London Melbourne New York Perth Singapore Sydney San Francisco Tokyo Wellington
