Marketers Trained To Succeed

Marketers trained to succeed

Training marketing staff and looking at a variety of techniques for doing so, is on the agenda of most firms, according to the ‘PSM Benchmark Report’ that will be published next week by Seldon Gill.

Internal seminars are the favoured option with 58% of participants, with industry seminars a close second preference with 53% of participants. Short courses are another way of educating (44%), with consultants and further tertiary education used by around a quarter of firms.

96% of respondents said they also encourage team members to take on extra training and development opportunities outside the firm.

It is fantastic to see that most senior PSM managers and firms look at a variety of ways for educating and training their marketing teams. Not only are the career paths of marketers valued, but firms are gaining access to skills and knowledge that cannot be gained purely from the workplace. Educating marketing staff not only creates happy and satisfied employees but is an excellent strategy for increasing retention.

The research is further supported by our survey last year of Gen Y candidates. When looking for a new employer, many lean towards organisations that are willing to support their further study in terms of either monetary support or flexible working arrangements that allow study time.

Further reading on this subject is available in our report ‘Trend Y’. Members of COG have full access to both the Trend Y report and the PSM benchmark report via the COG pages.
