Magic Circle Reaches Australia

One of the World’s largest law firms, part of the UK’s Magic Circle, Allen & Overy this week announced the launch of an Australian practice with the appointment of 17 new partners, 14 based in Sydney and three in Perth.

Commenting on their website, Allen & Overy senior partner David Morley said: "Our decision to launch in Australia underlines the increasing importance of Australia in the global and Asia-Pacific economies. Latest Survey shows job market healthy

A National business expectation survey released indicates that companies are set to employee more staff in the coming months meeting the demands of a strengthening economy.

Highlighting an improving Australian job market, Dun and Bradstreet’s national business expectations survey shows employment expectations for the June quarter have jumped to 5 index points, up from a flat reading for March. The June quarter result, 31 percentage points higher than a year ago, is the strongest rebound in the 22-year history of the survey.

Furthering hope for job seekers and business’ alike, official data to be released later this week, is expected to show that even though the jobless rate is tipped to rise to 5.6 per cent from 5.5 per cent, 15,000 jobs were created in January in Australia. This follows The January Olivier internet job index which was released last week showing a rise of 3.5 per cent, again boding well for those looking for employment.

The Reserve Bank has acknowledged that the downturn in Australia has been mild and a recovery is underway. Australia was among the first developed nations to raise rates last year, lifting them three times to 3.75 per cent.

Analysts now hope that the worst of the downturn has passed and jobs growth will continue to gather pace.

ACEA rebrand

The Association of Consulting Engineers Australia (ACEA) AGM was held on Saturday 5 December 2009 where the members of the ACEA voted to change the name of the Association to Consult Australia. This name change will take effect from 18 March 2010. Following an extensive consultation program, there was significant support for the resolution with it being passed by 96.41% of the vote.
